I find myself in music. I see a lot of young people write “music is my life LULZ!!»” but have no concept of what it is that makes music important to them.
My musical journey started when I was around 16. Up to that age I never listened to any music at all. My mum never let me listen to anything, she saw the negative influence certain music had on my brother and so decided to cut it completely from my life. As soon as I began learning bass I found something my life had been missing. I became a different person, I found myself through music, I found good friends and I made a lot of good memories. I blame who I am today on a lot of elements, music however changed my life forever.
My true love is music, I love the sonic sensations that fire up at hearing a brilliant chord being perfectly struck at a beat where notes collide. I feel music is ingrained into who I am, see I am an analytical person, I break down conversations and situations in my mind, I also find that I do just the same to the music I listen to.
I love imperfect music, where every note is not so scripted where it feels stale and lifeless. I often find that a poor singer who sings with passion and intensity can be much more effective then someone singing a cover with no emotional attachment to the song itself.
I love the technicality of musicians where a group of people work in perfect unison to create something unique. I love to find where the extra beats, what chord voicings and time signatures are being used.
I love a song that is perfectly sculpted in a studio that brings the perfect mix of vocals, bass and drums. I also love an untamed sound, that doesn’t lack heart or commitment but the 100’s of thousands of dollars worth of equipment that other bands use.
I love a good raw and strong guitar tone. Finding your sound and refining it is one thing but then to create the proper landscape for a song is difficult and rare to find.
I love a song with words so perfectly phrased that they bounce through your body and resound deep in your soul. A song delivered with such intensity that having it sung by anyone else would ruin the song itself.
I love a song that shows me where the musician is at. To the opposite end and I love where the lyrics beg you to dig further and find clues to what they mean.
I love the chaos
I love the calm
I love the pulse of electronics
I love simplicity
I love atmosphere
I love quirky
I love a good groove
Music is my first love. There are songs remind me of breakups, songs that remind me of roadtrips and songs that take me so far away my problems don’t exist, if only for a few minutes.
This is why I love music.
